📅📣 Key dates to remember if you’re affected by the XL Bully ban.
👉 From 31st December 2023, breeding, selling, advertising, rehoming, abandoning and allowing an American Bully XL dog to stray will be illegal in England and Wales. From this date, these dogs must be kept on a lead and muzzled in public.
👉 From 1 February 2024, it will be illegal to own an American Bully XL dog in England and Wales if it is not registered on the Index of Exempted Dogs.

The government has added XL bullies to the dog breed types banned in England and Wales. Restrictions will come into force on 31 December 2023 with more measures for owners in 2024.

Stop Breed Discrimination #EndBSL
On 15 September 2023, the UK Government announced its plans to ban the XL bully, adding a fifth dog to the list of banned types in the UK. In a matter of months, the XL bully will join the pit bull terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino and Fila Braziliero.
Details on how the ban will be implemented has not been confirmed yet.
For 32 years, dogs have been judged as 'dangerous' based on how they look due to Breed Specific Legislation. That's thousands of dogs whose behaviour poses no risk to public safety put down for no reason.

In 2018, the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Efra) Select Committee launched an inquiry into the legislation and recommended that the Government urgently review the law, particularly around Section 1.
The legislation makes it illegal to rehome or give away any dogs that have been identified as a prohibited type which means it is illegal for the RSPCA to find new homes for these dogs even if they would otherwise be considered ideal for rehoming with a family. This means that legally they are forced to put them to sleep which is extremely distressing for our staff and volunteers who form close bonds with these dogs.
