Ban The Exportation & Over Breeding Of Greyhounds Dogs for Commercial Use

Greyhounds are suffering extensive abuse and inhumane death across the world due to the exports of Irish and UK greyhounds. Transporters/agents/breeders/trainers regularly export the dogs without any care for their wellbeing.

Export of Greyhounds for Commercial USE*

Many greyhounds exported from the UK and Ireland are sold or loaned out for breeding. Both female and male greyhounds can end up in breeding kennels living in severely 'inhumane conditions', often in excessively high temperatures until they can no longer produce, leading to years of misery and suffering. Each female may produce a litter of around 10 puppies and will be used to whelp as many litters as possible throughout her life. They may suffer infection or other serious complications during or after the birth, often with little or no vet treatment. One male can sire tens of thousands of dogs and will usually remain in a kennel for his entire life.

While used for hunting these dogs sustain injuries such as being mauled by other animals, and receive no vet care often leading to a slow, painful death.

Greyhounds are used for racing at both licensed and unlicensed racing tracks. When no longer fit to race (due to age, injury, etc.) the dogs become surplus to requirements, resulting in many being poisoned, bludgeoned, hung, or even slowly cooked to death as greyhounds are at present being found within the Chinese dog meat trade.

Some individuals may proclaim to look after their imported dogs. However, with serious issues of:

  • poverty, lack of education,

  • no access to vet treatment

  • unsuitable climate,

  • owners are unable to provide even the most basic of care such as proper diet or vaccines to prevent illness and disease.

Only exports for the specific purpose of re homing via well established and reputable rescue can ensure that a dog's welfare needs will be met.

John Newell was responsible setting up breeding facility in Vietnam in 2000

Vet, John Newell, speaks of his involvement with greyhound racing in Vietnam and China..

Dr Newell had chief involvement in the set up of greyhound racing in Vietnam, a country that has been exposed for mass killing of greyhounds by use of lethal poison, Ecotraz, causing greyhounds to slowly die in horrific pain

Exporting of Greyhounds for Commercial ‘use’ Racing, Breeding and Hunting,

Barbaric practices are being carried out on greyhounds in countries where there are little or no animal welfare laws. For example, greyhounds are being found in the Chinese dog meat trade and are also being poisoned by IV administered 'Ecotraz' in Vietnam (A highly painful death)

Greyhounds are regularly being shipped from the UK to Pakistan, where we are told by Pakistan Citizens that they are only used to race for one season and are occasionally passed on to the pig hunters, where they will meet an horrific end when used to fight wild boar.

Why Should there be a Ban on Exports of Greyhounds for commercial USE*

The exports are creating mass breeding of greyhounds, meaning that millions will be exploited in the future. If we do not stop the exports now the problem will spiral out of control because of the growth of greyhound breeding facilities, dangerous race tracks and hunt kennels around the world, together with a lack of animal welfare laws in some countries and non enforced animal welfare laws in others.

Crucial to a blanket ban is the fact that some greyhounds are transported via intermediate countries to third countries. Below are a few examples of the routes that can be used when travelling to Asia:

Irish transports Ireland to Spain to China - Ireland to UK to China - Ireland to Scotland to England to Pakistan - Ireland to US to India

UK transports UK to France to China - UK to US to India - UK to Pakistan. UK dogs are also returned to Ireland before travelling via the above routes.

We would therefore like to contain all Irish and British greyhounds within Irish/UK borders, with the exception of exports to assist European greyhound rescue organisations with their vital work. We would call for neutered/spayed dogs to be shipped from well established and reputable rehoming centres to those matching the same criteria overseas, and which have long term history of re homing dogs to a family environment for non commercial use.

Proof of Greyhound in the UK/IRE being Exported

Both Champion greyhounds and those deemed no longer suitable for racing, are exported for use of breeding, racing, hunting to countries where they are not protected from horrific suffering and death.

In May 2016, Caged Nationwide intercepted a transport of 24 greyhounds on their way to China, and after bringing media attention to the case, Heathrow Airport Animal Reception declined to allow the dogs to travel due to the shoddy crates their owners were intending to ship them in. The dogs were returned to Ireland but the owners/ trainers and transporter involved were not punished. One of the transporter vehicles carrying the dogs did not comply with the Welfare of Animals During Transport Order (WATO) as it was an unequipped furniture removal van that was used to loosely stack the dogs in.

In October 2016 Caged attended 'World Freight Services' (WFS) in Manchester, following a tip off in relation to 4 greyhounds being exported to Pakistan. After several hours, and discussions with the staff at WFS the dogs were declined to fly on that date due to a safety hazard, in relation to the containers that they were being shipped in.

On Sunday the 22nd October 2017 Caged became aware of another export of 4 greyhounds to Pakistan via World Freight Services (WFS) and Pakistan International Airlines (PIA). We believe a very small animal handling company had arranged the shipment. This case was greatly exposed on social media. We attended the WFS to protest the export of the dogs on the day they were due to leave, but on our arrival the police advised us that the owner decided to delay the shipment due to the pressure he was under. We kept watch for the remainder of the day but no Greyhounds were seen arriving to WFS that day, however we believe the owner will attempt to ship the dogs on another flight to Pakistan.

It was believe a minimum of 20 greyhounds had flown from Manchester airport, via Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) within the following 10 months and with the help of just one small animal handling company. Additionally it was believed that WFS World Freight Services had no objections to generally handling greyhounds as Cargo for PIA.
