Ban the Use of Greyhounds & Dogs for Animal Testing

The Australian greyhound racing industry has created a rehoming crisis by breeding far too many dogs and failing to provide adequate resources to ensure they find new homes. Queensland Racing appears to have designed a cruel solution by sending greyhounds to research labs and universities.
Over the last four years, according to the Queensland Racing and Integrity Commission, 785 retired greyhounds have been “surrendered to other agency”, which includes “universities and veterinary practices.” QRIC adds that “euthanasia and adoption data from these agencies are not currently available.”
Previous experience has shown that greyhounds can be used in vivisection, blood and plasma extraction, and experimentation, and then killed.
The Queensland Government has to step up and stop this practice immediately and tell the public where the 800 greyhounds have ended up and how many are still alive. It may be that over the years thousands of Queensland greyhounds have ended their days in labs, frightened and confused, before they were destroyed.
As Racing Queensland has no greyhound rehoming policy, industry participants can also have their dogs killed, rather than finding them a home. In FY22, 67 greyhounds were euthanased as their owners considered them not suitable to rehome.

And not only this, but Queensland Labor are continuing to pump money into the greyhound racing industry, with $40 million injected into building a new racing track at Ipswich, rushed through under a Ministerial Infrastructure Designation. Minister Grace, where are these 800 greyhounds? And when are you going to shut down this violent sport?”

Every year Queensland Racing sends almost 200 greyhounds to labs and research facilities, probably to their deaths.
I call on the Queensland Government and Queensland Racing to urgently stop this immoral and unethical practice. In NSW, the industry regulator GWIC is about to introduce a ban on sending retired greyhounds to facilities that conduct "animal research, animal plasma or blood collection."
The Queensland Government should also publish the fate of the 785 greyhounds sent to these facilities over the last four years as reported by the Queensland Racing Integrity Commission in their quarterly greyhound reports.
The Australian greyhound racing industry has created a rehoming crisis through uncontrolled breeding, lack of socialisation and minimal resources allocated to rehoming. Additionally, there is no greyhound rehoming policy in Queensland which means unwanted dogs can be killed without any attempt by their owner to find them a home.
Minister Grace is on record as saying she would implement a program of monitoring dogs ‘to ensure that no animal will be able to disappear off the map.’
To meet this guarantee and the expectations of the Australian community, the Queensland Government must also:
- implement digital whole-of-life tracking as recently passed in the Victorian Parliament
- introduce caps on breeding and a rehoming policy to ensure that all dogs bred by the industry are able to live out their lives as pets when discarded by the industry
- redirect the $40m of taxpayer money allocated for the Ipswich mega-track to essential services such as hospitals and schools
